Când şi de ce a apărut Linux

Linux este atât un nucleu al sistemului de operare cât şi un termen generic pentru distribuţiile care îl folosesc. Este unul dintre cele mai cunoscute exemple de software free (liber, gratuit): spre deosebire de sistemele de operare proprietare (închise) ca Windows şi MacOS, tot codul sursă este disponibil publicului şi oricine îl poate utiliza, modifica şi redistribui în mod liber.

Iniţial, Linux a fost dezvoltat şi utilizat de entuziaşti ai calculatoarelor. De atunci, Linux a căpătat sprijinul unor corporaţii majore ca IBM, Hewlett-Packard şi Novell pentru utilizarea sa pe servere şi a câştigat popularitate pe piaţa calculatoarelor personale.

Principalele sale atuuri sunt:

• independenÅ£a de un anume producător,
• costul scăzut (sau gratuit),
• securitatea şi
• stabilitatea.

Linux a fost dezvoltat iniţial pentru microprocesoarele Intel 386 şi suportă acum toate arhitecturile populare de calculatoare (precum şi unele mai puţin întâlnite/folosite). Este folosit în soluţii începând cu sisteme "embedded" (cum ar fi telefoanele mobile şi video-recordere), calculatoare personale şi până la super-computere.
